PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT

Personal Development

Personal Development is the aspect of school life that explicitly teaches pupils how to develop into responsible, respectful, and active citizens, promotes equality of opportunity and an inclusive environment and develops pupils’ character. We want to ensure the readiness and opportunity for all pupils to flourish in their present and future contexts and we cater for this across many areas of school life through:

  • Dedicated Personal Development lessons in Y7 and 8
  • Fortnightly Personal, Social, Health and Economic education lessons throughout Y7-11, covering all statutory DfE requirements
  • Tutor time activities focussed on topical issues and well-being
  • Extra-curricular activities
  • Student leadership opportunities for all

Personal Development lessons

Pupils receive dedicated Personal Development lessons throughout years 7 and 8. These lessons aim to strengthen pupil’s positive personal traits so that they flourish and thrive into adult life as respectful, responsible, resilient and confident citizens who will cooperate and engage effectively in society. The Personal Development curriculum encourages pupils to reflect wisely on their character and provides opportunities for them to practise some core skills that we believe are valued by employers, as well as positively impacting on their mindset for academic success. The core skills we focus on are leadership, organisation, resilience, initiative and communication. These skills are commonly referred to using the acronym LORIC. Pupils receive nationally recognised accreditation for two tasks completed within each of these core LORIC skills through the PiXL Edge organisation. All pupils have the opportunity to achieve Apprentice, Pioneer and Graduate certificates over the course of five years. Year 9 pupils progress in their LORIC skills through student leadership roles, tutor time, extra-curricular activities and personal hobbies or clubs outside school, culminating in the opportunity to apply for the role of Senior Pupil Leader in Year 11.

A typical unit of work within Personal Development consists of understanding, reflection, discussion and practice of the core skill being studied. During the leadership unit, for example, we discuss the qualities of a good leader, considering examples of famous leaders in society and follow this up with a reflection of those skills that we already hold and those we may need to develop further. Pupils are challenged to demonstrate and develop their leadership skills by leading their own activity either in or out of school, individually or collaboratively, providing plans and evidence of their work, and engaging in team-based challenges that put their skills to the test. When evaluating the success of their challenge, pupils will reflect on how much they may have developed in the core skill of leadership and set targets for their next challenge. All of this is logged on the PiXL Edge database, counting as evidence of their personal ‘development’, and accreditation in student leadership. It is our aspiration that all pupils will have achieved Apprentice certification by the end of Year 8.
